“A portrait of my children once a week, every week, in 2014.”

Lillia: You told me that there are no girls you can talk to about games and art. It won’t be like that forever. Right now you’re swimming in a very small pond, but someday you will make it to the sea and find there are lots of fish just like you.

Zane: You are a fearless explorer! After spying some snowmobiles on our walk the other day, it is now your heart’s one desire to own a “blue one” of your own. It gives your mama a heart attack to think about what the future will bring!

Lillia: You are changing so fast…too fast for me sometimes. But, I will do my best to keep up with you.

Zane: Those wide, wondering eyes! There’s nothing that escapes their gaze.

Our second Christmas at my parents’s house was really low-key, which was great. The kids had all day at home to relax and enjoy and decompress from their first Christmas, so spirits were high and everyone had a great time (there was even some Christmas-themed BINGO!). It was wonderful to spend time with my family; I really wish I got to see my brothers more often.

This year we did things a little differently on Christmas day — it was partly intentional (working around my brother’s crazy fireman’s schedule) and partly unintentional (postponing Christmas with my in-laws because they have been very ill). In any case, here is our “home” Christmas (just us and the kids). Damian gave me a new camera lens for Christmas — WOOHOO! — so you might notice a difference in quality after the first few shots. It works SO well in low light/indoors. I can’t believe it.

Zane got lots of wooden vehicles (including a forklift!), and Lillia’s big present was a star-themed “kid cave” in the basement — it was a lot of work to get everything done in time for Christmas (thanks, Mom & Dad), but so worth it. There’s a video of the “big reveal” at the end of this post. Her reaction was priceless 🙂 Of course, she immediately started “customizing” the space (as was my hope). She’s working on a mural of some sort on the big blank wall next to the stairs. I’ll be posting more photos of the space in a couple of days as part of my New Year’s Resolutions Review for 2013.

lillia turns 10!

My “baby” is a decade old. Wow.

[Note: I accidentally left my camera in my car overnight so the lens was too foggy to take decent pictures. I had to use Damian’s camera. I’m definitely not used to it anymore, so I apologize if the quality of these pictures is not great.]

Check out this amazing Minecraft cake that my mom made!

Poor Lillia was so sick on her birthday. We had to pry her out of her bed.

But, she perked up considerably once the presents appeared!

Zane was pretty pleased with his gift, as well. As you can see, he’s something of an expert when it comes to power tools.

An adorable cat amidst the rubble.

If you ask her to smile these days, this is what you get.

We love her anyway. Happy Birthday, sweet Lillia!
